Le british longhair est un chat tout en rondeur, robuste et puissant. Forte musculature. Chat de taille moyenne à grande.

Le poids se situe : pour un mâle : de 6 à 8 kg ; pour une femelle : de 3 à 6 kg

Le british shorthair est caractérisé par sa tête très ronde et ses grands yeux ronds. La fourrure est courte et dense avec un sous-poil épais. Texture ferme, pelucheuse, donnant une impression de protection naturelle.

Le british longhair est la variété du british shorthair à poils mi-longs. Il possède les mêmes caractéristiques, mis à part la longueur de la robe, que son cousin shorthair. Il est caractérisé par sa tête très ronde et ses grands yeux ronds. La fourrure est mi-longue et soyeuse avec un sous-poil épais.

Toutes les couleurs de robe sont reconnues. Le british bleu est la variété la plus demandée.

Les yeux sont : grands, ronds, largement espacés. Une harmonie de couleur entre la robe et celle des yeux est obligatoire : cuivre, orangé foncé, bleu, vert ou bleu-vert, impairs (odd eyed).

Les british ont un caractère à l'image de leur allure de nounours, et sont des chats au tempérament paisible et équilibré. Il est aussi enjoué, patient, bien équilibré et peu émotif. D'un caractère égal, il est facile à vivre. Ce chat est affectueux, joueur mais non envahissant.

Ce sont des chats ayant une grande faculté d'adaptation et qui se plaisent aussi bien en compagnie d'enfants que de chiens ou d'autres chats.
